It sounds like dentures are the only option I have left. But, the dentist has freaked me out, since I’m only 28. I’ve struggled with my teeth for my entire life. I’m to the point where I cannot afford to try and maintain the teeth I have left.
When I went in to talk to my dentist about dentures, he lectured me for over an hour. He blamed me for a lifetime of terrible oral care. Then, he told me that he wouldn’t do dentures that I needed to basically spend a lot more money to try and repair what’s left of my teeth. He was so demeaning and rude. How do I find a dentist that wants to help?

Meredith,
Unfortunately, not every dentist has the best tone. However, it doesn’t mean he didn’t mean well. Many dentists share the sentiment to try to maintain and salvage your natural teeth, at all costs. Basically, once your teeth are gone, they are gone. So even though this dentist’s delivery sounds terrible, he may have had your best interests in mind.
At your young age, you will be dealing with facial collapse for a lot of your adult years. When your natural teeth are removed, the minerals and bone are resorbed so your body can use it elsewhere. This condition is called facial collapse. Have you ever seen denture-wearers and their face appears to be sunken in? They also look much older than they appear. If you choose dentures now, you may begin dealing with facial collapse in your forties.
Also, many denture patients complain of them not being comfortable and having difficulty eating. So, before you move forward with such a life-altering decision, please seek multiple opinions.
It would be wise to find a dentist that presents you with several options and different price points. There are other options beyond dentures to replace missing teeth. Dental implants are ideal because they are the most permanent solution. However, there are other treatments like implant overdentures, where dental implants are used to secure the denture in place.
Lastly, if there are teeth that can be saved, you should seriously consider those options. There are financing options and some dentists will work with you. Don’t make a decision on dentures, solely due to cost.
