You need complete dentures and you understand the problems with dentures:
- Reduced chewing efficiency
- They have the potential to come loose at embarrassing times
- Long-term bone shrinkage leading to facial collapse.
While the solution to these problems is having your dentures anchored with dental implants, implants are expensive and you’re looking for a more affordable option.
Beware of Cheap Dental Implants
There are many opportunities for dentists to take shortcuts in the placement and restoration of dental implants. Substandard fixtures, less thorough diagnosis, and rushed treatment can all lead to lower costs. But implant dentistry is no place for shortcuts. This is a highly demanding area of dentistry and the source of more dental malpractice claims than any other dental practice area.
A legitimate way to make an implant overdenture more affordable without sacrificing the success rate is to use fewer implants. While maximum stability can be obtained with six implants supporting a denture, two solid, well-placed implants can provide a dramatic improvement over a completely removable denture.
The Snap-On Denture
Two implants, usually placed closer to the front of the jaw, can anchor a denture enough to provide dramatically increased stability and keep it from coming loose.
Held by only two implants, there will be some up-and-down rotating movement in the denture, so the denture will not be screwed down as it is when more implants are used. But special snaps are used to allow this movement, as you can see in the drawing.
Compared with a removable denture, there are clear advantages. It will not come loose. Since there is no side-to-side movement, it is easy to chew and there is no need to restrict what you can eat. Facial collapse will be prevented because there will be no bone resorption around the implants. And if you ever want to upgrade to include more implant support, that option is available.
